HyperDrive GEN2 USB-C (HD-G206, HD-G212, HD-G218), why can't it output to a 4K60Hz display?
Devices (laptops, Macbooks, iPads) can be equipped with DisplayPort 1.2 or DisplayPort 1.4.
- DP 1.2 has a total of 4 lanes, each lane supporting 5.4Gbps. With a total of 4 lanes, it supports 4K 60Hz video, while with 2 lanes, it can only support a maximum of 4K 30Hz.
- DP 1.4 also has a total of 4 lanes, each lane capable of running at 8.1Gbps. It supports 8K with a total of 4 lanes, while with 2 lanes, it can support 4K 60Hz.
- When connecting the HyperDrive Gen2 USB-C Hub to a device, it will use 2 lanes for USB 3.2 signals to support USB-A/LAN/card slots, leaving 2 lanes for video. - If the device has a DP 1.2 USB-C port, 2 lanes can only support a maximum of 4K 30Hz. If it's a DP 1.4 USB-C port, 2 lanes can provide 4K60Hz.
- Apple devices support DisplayPort 1.4 and have the ability to output 4K60Hz:
+ iPad Pro 11-inch (2018 and 2020)
+ iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd & 4th Generation)
+ MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017 and later)
+ MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019 and later)
+ iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017 and later)
+ Mac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017 and later)
+ iMac Pro (2018)
